Another Faublas piece joins the Centre d’Art's permanent collection

“Gaya” was created in 2021, after Pascale Faublas returned from a residency in Barbados. It was among the works exhibited at “Archipelago.”
From 2019 to 2022, the UNESCO International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD), the Centre d’Art, and other cultural institutions across the Caribbean implemented a cross-residency program.
This initiative enabled women visual artists from the region to take part in creative residencies on other islands. In 2020, Pascale Faublas took part in a residency at Fresh Milk in Barbados.
She used this opportunity to continue her FANM series, which she began in 2019. While in Barbados, a mini-series emerged titled “Fanm se Poto Mitan,” from which at least three paintings were born: “Fanm se Poto Mitan #1,” “Fanm se Kajou,” and “Mètrès Fanm.”
Upon her return, she created “Gaya,” a 50 x 50-inch painting made with acrylic and wax on canvas.
“Gaya” (Mother Nature), like the other three works, was featured in “Archipelago,” an exhibition held in Port-au-Prince showcasing artworks produced through the cross-residency program.

The “Archipelago” exhibition was held from May 14 to June 18, 2022, at Maison Dufort. It showcased the works of nine Caribbean women artists: Pascale Bichot (Haiti/France), Pascale Faublas (Haiti), Miriam Hinds-Smith (Jamaica), Nadia Huggins (Saint Vincent/Trinidad and Tobago), Phaidra McQueen Sterlin (Haiti), Mafalda Nicolas Mondestin (Haiti), Pascale Monnin (Haiti), Kia Redman (Barbados), and Michelle Ricardo (Dominican Republic).
“Gaya” was donated to the Centre d’Art by Pascale Faublas. It joined the Centre’s permanent collection in 2023, becoming the third work by the artist to be included.
