“We came away with a whole new perspective on photography,” said two participants in the workshop.

The workshop, structured in three sessions, began with a first phase led by photographer Pierre Michel Jean. It was held from March 10 to 22, 2025, in the town of Les Cayes.

True to his signature approach, Pierre Michel Jean opened the workshop with a review of the history of photography. “It was very useful, especially for those of us who are self-taught,” said participant Cethide Joseph. “Understanding where photography comes from helps you better situate yourself and find direction in your own creative journey.”

This introduction laid a solid foundation for what participants considered one of the most impactful parts of the course. “From the very first sessions, I started to see the photographer’s profession differently. Beyond the economic aspect, a photographer who wants to leave a unique mark must stand out by developing a distinctive approach. Whether through a committed perspective, a strong aesthetic, or an experimental method, it’s not just about capturing an image—it’s about conveying a message, telling a story, or provoking thought. Photography becomes much more than a simple means of expression: it bears witness, sparks questions, and leaves a lasting impression,” explained Gentillon Francklin, another participant.

For Cethide Joseph, it was above all the artistic dimension of photography that captivated her. Thanks to the workshop, she has begun to refine her eye, develop a personal sensibility, and better understand how an image can transcend a simple snapshot to become a true work of art.

As part of the hands-on component, Pierre Michel Jean took the participants to explore several emblematic sites, including Saut-Mathurine in Camp-Perrin and the Botanical Garden of Les Cayes. These excursions offered an opportunity to sharpen their technique and experiment with various photographic approaches while being fully immersed in their environment.

Participants were full of praise for Pierre Michel Jean, describing him as a committed, patient, and passionate instructor. “He never hesitated to repeat his explanations, again and again, until everyone fully understood. He was always available for one-on-one guidance. At the end of the workshop, he even gave us exercises to complete and send back to him,” shared Cethide Joseph.

As a member of the 2 Dimansyon collective, Pierre Michel Jean left a lasting mark on his budding photographers.

Alongside this first phase of the course, the participants took the initiative to form a collective, allowing them to join forces and collaborate on various photographic projects, including documentaries and exhibitions.

The upcoming two sessions will be led by Reginald Louissaint Jr. and Josué Azor, each bringing fresh perspectives and new approaches to enrich the participants’ learning journey.
